Wat Phou traces the entire evolution of Khmer stone architecture from its earliest beginnings through the 13th century — 1,400 meters of galleries and pavilions ascending 100 meters over six terraces on the sacred slopes of Phou Khao mountain. The mountain's natural lingam-shaped peak was recognized as Shiva's presence long before construction began. The earliest brick structures date from the early 7th century, predating Angkor. Converted to Buddhist monastery in the 13th century. Part of the larger Champasak cultural landscape including two planned cities. At 296.93° Giza bearing, Wat Phou anchors the Laotian extension of the Khmer geometric network.
