Banteay Srei is universally regarded as containing the finest decorative carvings at Angkor — intricate narrative reliefs of such delicacy that scholars initially believed they must be the work of women (the name means "Citadel of Women"). In fact, built in 967 CE by Yajnavaraha, a royal brahmin counselor — the only major Angkor temple not commissioned by a king. Pink sandstone gives the small temple a warm amber glow. Hindu, dedicated to Shiva. Located 25 km northeast of the main Angkor group. André Malraux was arrested for stealing devatas from here in 1923. At 297.21° Giza bearing, Banteay Srei proves that geometric precision operates at every scale.
