Candi Mendut, the oldest of three aligned Buddhist temples (with Pawon and Borobudur), contains three of the finest stone-carved Buddhist statues in existence: a 3-meter Dhyani Buddha Vairocana flanked by Avalokitesvara and Vajrapani. The three temples form a straight processional line pointing toward Borobudur, suggesting pilgrims moved through increasing stages of spiritual refinement. Mendut's narrative reliefs include Jataka tales and an extraordinary panel of the goddess Hariti surrounded by children. At 301.29° bearing to Giza across 9,393 km, the starting point of Java's most sacred Buddhist axis.
