Candi Singhasari is a Hindu Shivaite funerary temple in East Java, Indonesia, built around 1300 CE as a posthumous monument for King Kertanegara, the last ruler of the Singhasari kingdom who was killed in a palace coup in 1292 CE. The temple is constructed of andesite stone on a square plan with the cella raised on a high stepped basement, giving the silhouette an unusual two-tier vertical proportion compared to other Javanese temples of the period. The exterior is left largely undecorated below the cella level, with the most elaborate carving concentrated on the door surrounds and Kala-makara arches. The temple originally housed a series of monumental statues of Hindu deities including Durga, Ganesha, and Bhairava — most were removed by Dutch colonial authorities in 1804 and now reside in the National Museum of Antiquities in Leiden. The Prajnaparamita statue from the same complex, regarded as a masterpiece of Singhasari sculpture, returned to Jakarta in 1978.
The temple core still stands intact.
