Gunung Kawi's ten rock-cut shrines — carved directly into 7-meter-high sheltered niches of sheer cliff face — line the Pakerisan River valley in a funerary complex without parallel in Southeast Asia. Dating to the 11th century reign of King Anak Wungsu, these candi (memorial towers) were hewn from living volcanic rock rather than built from assembled blocks. The river valley setting, with rice terraces cascading between the carved cliff faces, creates one of Bali's most sacred landscapes. At 300.48° bearing to Giza across 9,920 km, Gunung Kawi represents the subtractive architectural tradition — sacred space carved from the earth itself.
