Hilltop town in the Gargano peninsula of Apulia, Italy, sitting on the limestone massif at 796 metres elevation. The Sanctuary of Monte Sant'Angelo, founded in 490 CE around a cave where Saint Michael was said to have appeared three times to Bishop Lorenzo Maiorano of Siponto, is the oldest and most influential western shrine to the archangel Michael. The grotto is reached by descending 86 marble steps from the upper basilica; a Byzantine-era door of 24 bronze panels (1076) records biblical scenes. The site is one of the seven major Saint Michael sanctuaries forming the Saint Michael Line across Europe. The Lombards adopted the cult after AD 650 and made the cave a national shrine; pilgrimage to Monte Sant'Angelo was credited with the conversion of the Lombards from Arianism to Roman Catholicism.
