Mrauk U served as capital of the Arakan Kingdom from 1430 to 1785, accumulating the second-richest collection of Buddhist temples in Myanmar after Bagan. Fortified by 30 km of walls with intricate moats and canals that doubled as both defense and irrigation, the city controlled trade between India, Southeast Asia, and China. The Shitthaung Temple ('Shrine of 80,000 Images') contains a labyrinthine interior corridor lined with thousands of stone relief panels. At 293.01° bearing to Giza across 6,254 km, Mrauk U anchors the Bay of Bengal node of the Myanmar sacred-military architecture network.
