Pacatnamu occupies a dramatic promontory at the mouth of the Jequetepeque Valley, protected by rocky cliffs on two sides — a natural fortress that served as both a major Moche and later Chimu ceremonial and pilgrimage center. Multiple truncated pyramids rise across the site, the largest associated with elaborate burial offerings. At 60.60° Giza bearing, Pacatnamu sits on the coastal Pleiades corridor connecting Peru's north coast pyramid complexes from Sipan to Chan Chan. The site's strategic position — controlling access to the valley from the sea — suggests that pilgrimage and political control were inseparable in pre-Columbian coastal Peru. Christopher Donnan's excavations revealed textile workshops and evidence of large-scale ritual feasting.
