City-state at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, separated from Malaysia by the 1.05-km Johor Strait. The modern state was founded by Stamford Raffles for the British East India Company in 1819 on what was then a fishing village of 1,000 people; it became a sovereign nation in 1965 after expulsion from the Federation of Malaysia. Land area: 728 km², expanded from 581 km² in 1965 by reclaiming sand dredged from neighboring countries. Population density: 8,358 per km², among the highest in the world. The Marina Barrage (2008) dams the mouth of the Marina Channel, converting the central reservoir from saline to freshwater and supplying 10% of the city's drinking water. Changi Airport's Jewel pavilion (2019) contains a 40-metre indoor waterfall — the tallest indoor waterfall on Earth.
A city-state expelled by its own federation grew its land by a quarter using sand from other countries, dammed the harbor for drinking water, and put a forty-metre waterfall in its airport.
