Sukhothai Historical Park preserves the remains of the first Thai capital, founded around 1238 CE by King Si Inthrathit and serving as the seat of the Sukhothai kingdom until its absorption by Ayutthaya in 1438. The walled city covers 70 hectares and contains ruins of more than 200 monuments — temples, palaces, and reservoirs. Construction is primarily of laterite blocks faced with stucco, with the principal Buddha images cast in bronze and brick. The defining stylistic innovation of Sukhothai is the walking Buddha figure, a fluid bronze form unique to the period. The Wat Mahathat at the city center contains the principal stupa, decorated with a row of 168 stucco walking-monk figures. Wat Si Chum holds a single enormous seated Buddha 11.3 metres tall reaching to the chamber wall. King Ramkhamhaeng's 1292 CE inscription, now in the Bangkok National Museum, records the foundation of the Thai script and traditional Thai Buddhist polity.

UNESCO inscribed the park as a World Heritage Site in 1991.
