The Pyramid of the Magician at Uxmal is the only known oval-based pyramid in Mesoamerica — its rounded plan defying the rectangular norms of Maya architecture. Rising 35 meters through five superimposed construction phases spanning 500 years (6th-10th century CE), each phase wrapped around and enclosed the previous temple, creating a nested series of sacred spaces visible in cutaway excavations. Maya legend attributes its construction to a dwarf magician who built it in a single night. The pyramid's western staircase aligns with the setting of Venus at its extreme southerly position, connecting the structure to the Feathered Serpent deity associated with that planet. At Giza bearing 50.02° and 11,573 km from the Pyramid Plateau, Uxmal's Puuc-style architecture — characterized by elaborately carved limestone mosaic facades — represents the pinnacle of Late Classic Maya artistic achievement. The Governor's Palace nearby contains the most sophisticated astronomical alignment in the Maya world.
