One of 26 major adobe pyramids at Tucume — the sprawling 'Valley of the Pyramids' in Peru's Lambayeque region — Huaca 1 rises from a landscape dominated by the sacred mountain Cerro La Raya. The site drew Thor Heyerdahl, who excavated here from 1988 to 1994, finding evidence he believed supported transoceanic contact theories. Successive Lambayeque, Chimu, and Inca occupations layered the pyramids with new construction phases spanning 700 years. The 60.30° Giza bearing places Tucume along the Pleiades corridor threading through Peru's north coast pyramid complexes — a chain of ceremonial centers stretching from Sipan to Chan Chan.
