Dhammayangyi is the largest temple in Bagan — a six-tiered pyramidal mass built by the parricide king Narathu (r. 1167-1170 CE), who murdered his father and brother to seize the throne. Famous for its obsessive brickwork precision — mortar is invisible between bricks; legend holds that builders whose work admitted a needle between stones lost their fingers. The inner passages were mysteriously sealed with rubble, perhaps to entomb evidence of ritual killings. Narathu himself was assassinated by Indian mercenaries before completion. At 292.87° Giza bearing, Dhammayangyi's brutal perfection and sealed chambers make it the darkest monument on the Bagan plain.
