The Bayterek Tower in Astana (now Nur-Sultan), capital of Kazakhstan — a 105-metre-tall observation tower designed by British architect Norman Foster and Kazakh architect Akmurza Rustembekov, opened in 2002 as the symbol of the relocation of the Kazakh capital from Almaty to Astana in 1997. The structure consists of three stylised tree-trunk supports rising to a 22-metre-diameter golden glass sphere — a representation of the egg laid by the Samruk bird of pre-Islamic Turkic mythology in the branches of the world tree. The interior of the sphere preserves a gold-cast handprint of Nursultan Nazarbayev set into a marble plinth; visitors place their right hand into the impression while the Kazakh national anthem plays automatically. The tower is the most-visited monument in the city and the most reproduced single image in Kazakh state iconography.
A 105-metre observation tower built as the central symbol of a national capital that did not exist in its modern location until 1997, with the founder's handprint as the principal interior installation.
