Rising 97 meters above Nur-Sultan's ceremonial axis, the Bayterek Tower was completed in 2002 to Nursultan Nazarbayev's personal design, encoding the Kazakh myth of Samruk — a sacred bird that lays a golden egg in a cosmic tree each year. The tower's branching steel framework represents the Tree of Life spanning three realms: underworld (underground), earthly (trunk), and celestial (golden sphere). Inside the 22-meter golden orb at the summit, visitors place their hand in a gilded cast of Nazarbayev's palm — a ritual echo of ancient hand-print ceremonies found in caves from Sulawesi to Lascaux. At Giza bearing 250.28°, the tower anchors one end of Astana's 4.3 km ceremonial boulevard, which terminates at the Khan Shatyr transparent pyramid, creating a deliberate axis of symbolic structures designed by Norman Foster. The city's planned geometry on the Kazakh steppe mirrors Brasília's placement in empty cerrado.
