The Bahal temples (I, II, and III) in Padang Lawas, North Sumatra, form the largest Vajrayana Buddhist complex on the island — linked to the Pannai Kingdom, a Srivijaya vassal state. Bahal I, the largest, features a brick temple with Tantric Buddhist iconography including fierce guardian figures and esoteric mudras rarely seen outside Tibet and Nepal. The complex sits in the Barumun River valley surrounded by the Bukit Barisan mountain range. At 301.37° bearing to Giza across 7,877 km, the Bahal temples mark the Tantric Buddhist node of the Sumatran energy corridor.
