Pura Besakih is the principal Hindu temple complex of Bali, Indonesia, situated on the southwest slope of Mount Agung at 1,000 metres elevation. The complex consists of 23 separate temples organized around the central Pura Penataran Agung, with construction documented from at least the 14th century CE under the Gelgel and later Klungkung dynasties — though megalithic stepped terraces beneath the main temple suggest a sacred site of much greater antiquity, possibly preceding the arrival of Hindu religion in Bali in the 8th century. The architecture combines stone megalithic bases with traditional Balinese tiered meru roofs of black palm fiber thatch. Pura Besakih survived the 1963 eruption of Mount Agung when lava flows passed within metres of the temple boundary without damaging the principal structures — an event interpreted by Balinese tradition as divine protection. The complex remains an active pilgrimage and ceremonial center, with the great Eka Dasa Rudra purification ritual held once per century.
The terraced site still rises in stone-walled tiers up the volcano flank.
