Sambor Prei Kuk is the capital of the Chenla kingdom in central Cambodia, identified with the historical Isanapura founded by King Isanavarman I in the early 7th century CE. The site flourished between approximately 600 and 800 CE and predates the rise of Angkor by two centuries. The complex contains three principal walled temple groups — Prasat Sambor, Prasat Yeai Poeun, and Prasat Tao — comprising more than 100 brick and sandstone temples scattered across a forested area of 25 square kilometres. The temples are typically octagonal in plan with high tiered roofs, decorated with carved sandstone lintels and pediments depicting Hindu mythology and the distinctive flying palace motif unique to pre-Angkorian Khmer art. The site was bombed during the American war in Cambodia in 1970-75 and several temples sustained damage. UNESCO inscribed the site as a World Heritage property in 2017.
Many of the brick towers still stand among the trees, the sandstone door surrounds preserved within their brick frames.
