The Semna fortress complex — four interlocking fortifications (Semna West, Kumma, Semna South, and Uronarti) — guarded the narrowest point of the entire Nile, where the river compressed to just 400 meters between granite cliffs at the Second Cataract. Built by Senusret III around 1850 BCE, these fortresses controlled all trade between Egypt and Nubia. Nilometers carved into the rock recorded annual flood levels. The entire complex now lies beneath Lake Nasser, relocated only in fragments. At 0.98° bearing to Giza across 943 km — virtually on the Giza meridian, a military chokepoint on the Nile energy line.
