Sai Island — the largest inhabited island in the Nile between the Second and Third Cataracts — contains an archaeological sequence spanning from the Neolithic through medieval times, making it one of the most complete chronological records in all of Nubia. A Kerma culture cemetery, New Kingdom Egyptian fortified town, Napatan and Meroitic remains, medieval Christian settlement, and Ottoman fortress all layer upon one another. The island's strategic position made it a permanent settlement node across every civilization that controlled the upper Nile. At 4.34° bearing to Giza across 1,034 km on the Nile corridor ley line.
