New Kingdom Egyptian colonial town and temple on the west bank of the Nile in northern Sudan, founded by the young Amenhotep IV in the early fourteenth century BCE shortly before he became Akhenaten and moved the imperial capital to Amarna. Sesebi Temple was built of sandstone and mud-brick within a fortified rectangular enclosure measuring roughly 270 by 200 metres along its outer walls. The principal temple originally bore carved relief decoration showing the king worshipping a triad of the traditional gods Amun, Re-Horakhty, and Ptah, but during the Amarna religious revolution this iconography was systematically chiselled away and replaced with imagery of the solar disc Aten. After Akhenaten's death the older gods were restored on the same walls, leaving three distinct layers of decoration still visible in places. Excavations were conducted by Aylward Blackman in 1936–1938 and resumed by Kate Spence and Pamela Rose for Cambridge from 2008 onward.

A theological revolution and counter-revolution recorded itself on the same temple wall, layer by layer, before the colonists abandoned it.
