Ancient Clusium (modern Chiusi in Tuscany) was described by Pliny the Elder as the site of one of the four great labyrinths of the ancient world — the tomb of Lars Porsena, the Etruscan king who besieged Rome in 508 BCE. Pliny described a monument of such complexity that no one could find the exit without a thread. Though never found archaeologically, the extensive Etruscan tomb systems beneath Chiusi — with their painted chambers and winding corridors — suggest the labyrinth tradition was literal as well as literary. At 315.66° Giza bearing, Chiusi sits on Tuscany's volcanic tuff belt, where Etruscan engineers carved cities of the dead that mirrored the cities of the living above ground.
