Carved on the right pier of the portico of San Martino Cathedral in Lucca, this 80-centimeter finger labyrinth bears a Latin inscription referencing Daedalus: 'Hic quem Creticus edit Daedalus est Labyrinthus' ('This is the labyrinth built by the Cretan Daedalus'). The Chartres-type design, dating to the 12th-13th century, was traced by pilgrims' fingers on the Via Francigena — the medieval pilgrimage route from Canterbury to Rome. Lucca's position as a mandatory stop on this route made the labyrinth one of the most-touched carvings in medieval Europe. At 315.94° Giza bearing, the cathedral sits within Lucca's remarkably intact Roman amphitheater walls. The explicit Daedalus reference directly links Italian Christian labyrinth practice to Minoan Crete.
