A small classical labyrinth carved on the exterior of Pontremoli Cathedral in the Lunigiana region of Tuscany — near the famous prehistoric stele statues dating to the 3rd millennium BCE. The Lunigiana stele statues, depicting armed warriors and goddesses, represent one of Europe's most important collections of megalithic anthropomorphic sculpture. The labyrinth carving on the cathedral may reference this deep prehistoric heritage. Pontremoli guards the Cisa Pass, the ancient route connecting the Po Valley to the Ligurian coast.
