Western Xia Mausoleum 5 (Xianling) is the tomb of Emperor Huizong (Li Bingchang, r. 1067-1086 CE), a ruler who struggled against the domination of his powerful mother, Empress Dowager Liang. She effectively controlled the Western Xia court, even leading military campaigns. The mausoleum preserves the standard Western Xia layout: outer city, inner city, offering hall, and the distinctive octagonal earth-cone tower. Glazed architectural ornaments and carved stone fragments recovered from excavations reveal sophisticated artisanship. At 286.68° Giza bearing across 6,759 km, it threads the same needle as its eight companion tombs.
